You have set up a password for the Root user...

You have set up a password for the Root user during the setup of MySQL 5.

So your connection command should be mysql -uroot -p

When launched mysql will ask you for your password. Just type it...

The fresh cavedude install needs some update to be compatible...

You have to specify 127.0.0.1 as minilogin_ip in your client.
And of course run the client on the same computer as the server...
