You might try starting the server manually like...
You might try starting the server manually like ./world and a few ./zones to see if those work.
I've run the server on gentoo and centos and it worked well there.

I updated to 1108 and I figured out what my problem was. I was using a strict copy paste from the changelog which says:

Have you tried just firing up a few zone.exe's alone?
Before I got eqlauncher figured out and the way I wanted it I'd just write a script (in bash but you can use a .bat) to start a few of them.

A lot of people really love BSD ( I personally don't) but if you're looking to setup a server and you've already got a BSD box online for say webhosting it'd be easy to add that to the mix.
